CNN Neighborhood Small Grant Proposals Due November 1
The CNN Neighborhood Small Grants Program has $15, 000 available to
neighborhood and community-based organizations in the CNN area. The grant
requests range from $500-$5000 to support connections to underrepresented
groups, build organizational and neighborhood capacity. Proposals will be
due no later than 4p November 1, 2006. For more information on project

Rose City Park Candidates Fair Oct 24th Do
you know what the ballot measures are about or the expected impact of any of
the ballot measures? How will you vote? Come and get the information youll
need to make an informed decision when you vote on November 7th! The
following candidates have been invited to participate Representative in
Congress, 3rd District: Earl Blumenauer (DEM), Bruce Broussard (REP); State
Representative, 45th District: Jackie Dingfelder (DEM), Dick Osborne (REP);
Multnomah County Commissioner, District #2:Jeff Cogen, Lew Frederick.
Presenters from either a neutral party such as the League of Women Voters or
representatives of both sides of the State and County ballot measures have
been invited to provide information. All are welcome Tuesday, October 24 at

Metro's Nature in Neighborhood Grant Program Workshops Metro awarded
$560,000 to individuals, organizations, schools and public agencies for
habitat restoration and education. The goal of this program is to link
participants to their local watershed through active restoration, education,
community building and partnerships. The Nature in Neighborhood program will
be providing 4 free grant writing workshops October 19th and 21st, December
7th and 9th. These workshops are for those who are looking to learn more
about this program and get some general pointers on applying for a grant.
There will be an opportunity for you to discuss your project ideas and get
some feedback and ideas on how to proceed with your grant application
process. This workshop coincides with the announcement of a pre-application
process for an upcoming round of grant funding. Please register with Janelle

2006 Spirit of Portland Awards Nominations Due OCT. 27
Nominations are being solicited for the City of Portlands annual Spirit of
Portland Awards. The Spirit of Portland Awards are one way the City
recognizes the importance of citizen involvement in shaping the livability
of Portland. The Mayor and City Commissioners will present awards in late
Fall. Awards will be given this year for Humanitarian, Independent Spirit,
Community Harmony, Large Business, Small Business, Non-Profit Organization,
Neighborhood of the Year, Outstanding Partnership, Employee Volunteer, and

"Ten Minute Meetings with Tom" on NE Fremont 10/21 Mayor Tom Potter will
be meeting with residents in Beaumont-Wilshire, Cully, Rose City Park,

ABC's of Land Use Workshop November 18
Learn about the City of Portland's land use and development review
processes. Get hands-on experience responding to typical issues that come
up in land use reviews. Get an overview of how state, Metro, and City land
use goals and policies are organized. Learn what Land Use Reviews (LUR's)
are and the difference between Type I, II, IIx and III applications. Find
out how to read a land use notice and how to respond. Presenters include
Marguerite Feuersanger from the Bureau of Planning and a representative from

Portland Business Association Grants
$225,000 in grant funds will soon be available to BDAs and other business
associations.$100,000 will be available this fall and $100,000 next spring.
These funds are open to all business associations in Portland and the
requirements are the same as APNBA's - Up to $5000 per cycle to be matched
at least dollar for dollar by the association. The remaining $25,000 is the
annual Business District Grant Program, earmarked for improvements in
individual districts, awarded in December to be completed within six months.

Comment on Parks Natural Areas Acquisition Strategy
The strategy will be considered by Portland City Council at a hearing on
October 18, 2006: time certain is 11:00am, 1221 SW 4th. Much of Portland
Parks and Recreation's local share focus for the 2006 Metro open space bond
measure is on natural area acquisition. We have developed a Natural Areas
Acquisition Strategy in cooperation with other city bureaus, agencies, and
organizations to complete a connected system of natural areas in Portland as

Comment on Metro's Transportation Priorities 2008-11
The public is invited to comment on projects to fund through Metro's
Transportation Priorities 2008-11, a regional process to schedule
distribution of approximately $45.4 million in federal transportation funds
at 5 p.m. Thursday, November 16, Metro Regional Center, 600 NE Grand Ave. A
45-day comment period will open with release of a "first cut" project list
on October 13 and end on December 1. To ensure that oral testimony is
accurately recorded, we encourage people to also submit their comments in

Madison HS SUN Program Classes Open to Community
The Madsion SUN classes are available to community members and students are
welcome to attend with their parents. Yoga and Adult Computer 101 Skills
Training are open for enrollment. Also, College 101 for Parents Workshop is
a free four-week series of classes addressing topics that will give parents
tools to help their students through the college application process. To

Resolutions Northwest Free Mediation Training
RNW is currently accepting applications for a limited number of spaces at
the annual volunteer mediation training. The application deadline is
January, 16 2007. RNW is a community mediation, nonprofit organization that
is committed to strengthening personal and community responsibility by
providing constructive conflict resolution services and education. The
Neighborhood Mediation Program offers free mediation training that includes
a full immersion, 32 hour training along with a year long, hands-on
experience with a mentor. If you are called to serve the community by
offering your time, talent, and stable presence during times of conflict,

Friends of Trees Leadership Trainings
Friends of Trees is expanding its core group of key volunteers by offering
leadership trainings on Nov. 4 and 11. Local experts and Friends of Trees
staff will educate volunteers about city trees, local ecosystems, proper
tree planting techniques, plant accessorizing, and volunteer leadership.
Trained crew leaders will guide other volunteers during weekend
tree-plantings and restoration events between Nov. 2006 and March 2007.

Landlord Training Program in October
The Fall Landlord Training classes will be on October 18, 25, 28, and 30th.
Introduced in 1989, the program has taught over 10000 Portland-area owners
and managers maintain property in compliance with City maintenance
regulations. The Workshop focuses on keeping rental properties safe of free
and illegal activity by training landlords in effective property management
and techniques for dealing with illegal activities by tenants. Please go to

Basic Naturescaping Workshops
You are invited to a free 4-hour workshop to learn how to naturescape your
yard. Naturescaping features beautiful native plants, natural landscapes and

identifying native plants, and a short outdoor field trip to a nearby home

Regional Travel Options Grants for 2007-2009
Metro's Regional Travel Options (RTO) Program announces the RTO Grants. The
purpose of this grant program is to fund projects which reduce
transportation related emissions to meet and maintain national air quality
standards. Metro's RTO Program coordinates the grant process and welcomes
applications from government agencies and non-profit organizations.
