Subject: Crosswalk Enforcement Action Scheduled for Wednesday, October 11
Dear Beaumont-Wilshire Neighborhood Association, Central Northeast
Neighbors, The Skanner, and Beaumont Business District,
On Wednesday, October 11 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. uniformed officers from the
Portland Police Bureau Traffic Division will be in the area of NE Fremont
and NE 48th conducting a crosswalk enforcement action. The enforcement
action will focus on not only drivers but also pedestrians and bicyclists
that fail to follow the law.
The Oregon Crosswalk Law (ORS 811.010) states, "Motorists are required to
stop and stay stopped for pedestrians in a marked or unmarked crosswalk when
the pedestrian is in the motorist's lane or the adjacent lane." Drivers
must stop and remain stopped until pedestrians crossing the street clear the
driver's lane plus the lane before and the lane after the motorist's lane.
When the driver is turning at an intersection controlled by a traffic
signal, the driver is required to stop and remain stopped for pedestrians
until they have cleared the lane into which the vehicle is turning plus 6
feet of the next lane. A Portland Office of Transportation staff member
will act as the pedestrian decoy.
A meeting with the press will be from 2:00 - 2:30 p.m., followed by the 2:30
- 4:00 p.m. crosswalk enforcement action. Attached is a Media Advisory for
your review.
Please contact me if you have any questions or need additional information.
Thank you,
Sharon
