MAYOR POTTER ANNOUNCES NEW DIRECTOR
OF THE OFFICE OF NEIGHBORHOOD INVOLVEMENT
Mayor Tom Potter has appointed Amalia Alarcón as the new director of the
City of Portland's Office of Neighborhood Involvement (ONI).
Alarcón has served as Director of ONI's Metropolitan Human Rights Center and
Program Manager for the Neighborhood Resource Centers. At ONI, she has
provided support to neighborhood coalitions and associations; civil rights
referrals; immigrant and refugee coordination, and worked closely with City
Council and County Board of Commissioners offices. She has been responsible
for the development and monitoring of Affirmative Action goals. She has
previously worked for the State of Oregon's Health Division, Planned
Parenthood and as director of the Children's Care Program of Northern Lights
Alternatives in New York.
Alarcón has served as Interim Director since January, when Jimmy Brown was
appointed manager of the Portland Water Bureau's community outreach and
customer services group. She assumes her new duties immediately.
"Amalia has established excellent rapport with neighborhood associations,
community organizations and city staff in her seven years with the bureau,
and in her tenure as Interim Director of ONI," said Mayor Potter. "I am
thrilled and excited to have her lead this critically important organization
as we work to expand civic engagement at all levels of community decision
making. I am confident she will serve the community and the City well."
Mayor Potter also acknowledged the energy, spirit and community
contributions of Howard Weiner, the second of the two finalists for the
position. Weiner's strong candidacy was driven by his leadership in Old
Town/Chinatown and longstanding commitment to community involvement.
The announcement follows an intense, six month recruitment and interview
process that concluded with two community forums and interviews with Mayor
Potter. There were over 45 applicants for this position.
The ONI Director search was led by a hiring committee made up of a diverse
representation of individuals from the neighborhood system, community
organizations and ONI staff. The committee was charged with reviewing the
job description, working with the City Bureau of Human Resources to target
markets for recruitment, selecting candidates for interview, conducting
interviews and making recommendations to the Mayor for final selection. The
two finalists participated in two community forums last week. Feedback from
community members in attendance were directed to the Mayor, who then
interviewed each of the finalists before making a decision.
